Training provider points to digital tools as key to preparing young people for future workplaces
As the International Day of Education is marked worldwide, online training provider High Speed Training has drawn attention to the growing role of technology in helping young people develop skills for the future of work, while stressing the importance of balanced and thoughtful implementation in schools.
What is educational technology?
Educational technology, commonly referred to as EdTech, describes the broad use of technology to support teaching, learning and the daily management of educational institutions. It extends beyond physical devices such as laptops and tablets, and includes digital software, online platforms and a wide range of tools designed to enhance educational delivery and administration.
Dr. Richard Anderson, Learning Experience Director at High Speed Training, said: “Technology in education is not about replacing teachers, but about empowering them with tools to create more dynamic and inclusive learning experiences. The use of technology in education is nuanced, and the advantages and disadvantages of its use should be carefully considered to assess its suitability for your environment.”

Pandemic-driven acceleration of digital adoption
The uptake of EdTech increased significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic, when schools were required to shift rapidly to remote learning. The Department for Education described this period as creating “an unprecedented need for remote teaching and learning solutions”.
Research indicates that 64% of schools increased or upgraded their technology during this time to meet demand. This rapid expansion demonstrated how digital tools could support learning beyond the traditional classroom, enabling access to lessons and resources across different locations and schedules.
How schools are using technology today
According to Dr Anderson, digital technologies are now typically used in three main areas within schools.
Dr Anderson said: “Today, these technologies are typically used in three key ways within schools. They are used for school management and administration, streamlining tasks like pupil data management and parent communication. They provide direct support for teaching and learning through tools like virtual learning environments and automated marking systems.”
“Finally, they assist with pastoral support, helping schools monitor pupil wellbeing and facilitate meetings with external safeguarding professionals. From these foundational uses to the cutting edge of AI-powered personalised learning platforms, these digital tools are now a fundamental component of modern education.”
These applications reflect a shift towards integrated digital systems that support not only classroom instruction but also wider school operations and student welfare.

Benefits and challenges of classroom technology
The use of technology in education is not without challenges. Potential drawbacks include student distraction, over-reliance on digital tools, and unequal access to devices and connectivity. These factors can affect how effectively technology supports learning, particularly where resources are limited.
However, when used as a complementary resource rather than a replacement for traditional teaching, technology can support greater engagement, improve collaboration, and help students develop essential digital literacy skills. It can also play a significant role in supporting students with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), where assistive technologies can be used to tailor learning approaches and improve accessibility.
Focus on skills for a digital future
High Speed Training has linked its comments to broader discussions around employability and digital competence, particularly for younger people entering an increasingly technology-driven labour market.
Dr. Anderson continues: “On this World Youth Skills Day, we want to champion the thoughtful and effective use of technology to foster the skills that will enable young people to thrive in an increasingly digital world. It’s about developing digital literacy, critical thinking, and the ability to collaborate in online environments.”
