Each panelist brought valuable insights based on their extensive experience in educational environments.

The discussion began by addressing the emotional challenges students face post-COVID. Dr. Archibald highlighted that while many students coped well with the support of family, there remain vulnerable groups who showed more pronounced signs of anxiety and isolation. Factors such as pre-existing mental health issues or family instability put these students at greater risk during the pandemic. The panelists emphasized the importance of parental awareness regarding signs of emotional distress, such as changes in sleeping and eating habits or increased withdrawal from social interactions.

Dr. Crosslin provided a counselor’s perspective, noting that many students thrived on the social connections established through in-person learning prior to the pandemic. The shift to remote learning led to feelings of disconnection and an increase in anxiety, as students struggled with learning gaps and technology-related challenges.

Mrs. Bishop emphasized the need to address and normalize discussions around mental health in educational settings. She noted that in the past, there has been a stigma associated with seeking help, but recent trends indicate an awareness of the importance of mental wellness. The panelists advocated for a holistic approach to education, emphasizing that mental well-being plays a crucial role in academic success.

Throughout the conversation, the experts shared strategies for parents, teachers, and caregivers to detect signs of distress in students. The panel highlighted the importance of early intervention and a comprehensive support system that includes social-emotional learning initiatives within schools.

As the segment drew to a close, the panelists expressed hope for the future, outlining the ongoing efforts to support student well-being through collaborative efforts between families, schools, and communities. They encouraged open conversations about mental health and the valuable resources available within the educational framework.
